Liverpool Soldier
by Paul Hurley
5.0 out of 5 stars Great WWII fiction!, January 12, 2010
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story revolves around a German officer and his relationship with a British woman. Britain has lost the war against Germany, and most of Europe is under German rule. I won't give away any of the plot, but suffice to say, it has many twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages well into the night. You won't know how it ends until you turn the very last page.

I found it hard to find any faults with this book (other than a few grammatical errors). It's very well written and researched. If you enjoy WWII history in any way, do yourself a favor and pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars What if...., 23 Dec 2010
This review is from: Liverpool Soldier (Paperback)
As a WWII baby, I was brought up under British post-war austerity but with thankful acceptance that the Allies had prevailed against the Nazis and the Japanese.
However,my formative years were clouded by the thought of "what would have happened to us if..."
Paul Hurley's book, Liverpool Soldier, paints a stark picture of a defeated British population waking up to the realisation that all is not quite right in the new Germano-British relationship.
As the book's title suggests, the story is set in post war Liverpool with the narrative focussing on the lives and interactions of the central characters, Ralf (a much decorated and promoted German officer),Felix (his close friend and comrade-in-arms)and Angela Mackin (a British Wren).
Using his knowledge of both the contemporary Liverpool scene and German military units and ranks, the author develops a story line that blends fictional characters with historical figures and facts, taking the reader on an emotional roller-coaster ride to a surprising conclusion.
A book to read, enjoy and reflect on....
This is a review of Liverpool Soldier from the main Liverpool Daily:-
They are ordinary patriotic people with ordinary values, nothing fancy. Despite her dislike of the Germans, however, Angela is attracted to Ralf and so unfolds the story of patriotism, heroism, fanaticism, brutality, death and love.
Hurley is strong on detail, having researched the Third Reich. But this book is a nightmare rooted in the imagination.    David Charters article in the
Liverpool Daily Post

Middlewich

In May 2005 I compiled and had published a local history book about Middlewich in Cheshire. It is titled simply 'Middlewich!' . This was a joint effort between me and Brian Curzon (recently deceased), a local historian and academic.  It can be purchased locally or through Amazon. It may also be purchased directly from the publisher  www.tempus-publishing.com  - A synopsis is copied below.

Liverpool Soldier

Liverpool Soldier, Can be purchased anywhere by typing the title and my name into Google and AbeBooks will find the cheapest seller.
The publishers are now selling all books with a 50% discount. Buy this one for £6.25. Go to http://www.publishamerica.com/shopping/shopdisplayproducts.asp?Search=Yes
In it well researched fact and plausible fiction are carefully interwoven to form an alternative and frightening history of England. Two people meet and fall in love - Ralf the German CO of the British Free Corps-SS based at Deysbrook Barracks in Liverpool & Angela a Wren Officer from the Scotland Road area of the city based at HMS Eaglet.

It is a military tale, not just a war story but a thriller based on the premise that in 1940 Germany invaded Britain! It is written factually until Dunkirk. The cream of the allied armies are then trapped and imprisoned. The Germans invade Britain successfully.

Can I Come in Now Sarge

Can I Come in now Sarge is my police autobiography. This first book of my autobiography consists of 96.686 words; there is ample scope to increase or decrease the wordage as required.
The story starts during my strict Catholic upbringing. In 1963 I joined the Royal Navy serving around the world. After leaving and working for a short time building the M27 motorway (2 weeks!) I joined the Cheshire Police. Some of the interesting learning curves are outlined.
After two years, I trained as a detective and this was followed by a period as a plain-clothes officer and a short time in uniform. There are many anecdotes from this period.
I then joined the CID, again stories from the period which include CID politics!
In 1985 I started work on the No 1 Regional Crime Squad, advanced driver training, surveillance training and undercover work on the biggest police drugs operation in the North West at the time. This operation included the arrest of Andy Rourke, bass guitarist with 'The Smith's' pop group; the band was broken up shortly after
I later returned to uniform duties as a Sergeant at Macclesfield and Wilmslow. After 15 months I returned to the RCS where I again dealt with serious crimes including murders. Commendations and car crashes.
The day before the Berlin Wall came down I sorted out the offence of kidnapping that had made national headlines on that day. I recovered the kidnapped child.
Returning to leafy Cheshire, well, Warrington! I set up the present Cheshire Paedophile Squad. This was the second most important of its kind after North Wales I took the first complaint and arrested the offender. Detected a murder and interviewed the murderer. Etc Etc.
All is written with a strong sense of cynicism and humour which enables the story to flow comfortabley from hilarious anecdotes to heart rending sadness. Examples of the poor state of the police force today compared with what happened in the 'evil' seventies.

Police Dog Jake

Police Dog Jake comprises a series of illustrated children's books at present 3 books of 8 stories per book long. It is aimed at the  7 to 11+ age group.  In 2003 it was signed up for five years by the Metropolitan Police. They were to publish it and obtain sponsorship. It would then be used in schools but in 2008,after a regime change,  they decided that theycould no longer continue the project! They did however promise continued support if required.

The stories take him from birth through to life as a working police dog. The stories can be continued indefinitely.

The illustrator of the attached picture was Pat Kelsall. Pat is a respected illustrator who has exhibited in, amongst other venues, the Royal Academy.

A respected Literary Agent has shown an interest in the project.

I have included the index and Chapter One.

Land Girl to Spy

This is the second book that I am concentrating on at the moment. Now that Liverpool Soldier has been put to bed, Manna from Hell is the next and then this one.  In this story I am back to what I know best, the war. In Land Girl to Spy we follow a girl and her friend as the clouds of war creep closer. Eventually she joins the Women’s Land Army where she befriends a German POW.  It is currently 5.000 words long. I will include the first page but remember the copyright implications!
